This site displays the remains of a Roman bath-house, part of a villa built 1,700 years ago. Ingeniously preserved in a vault underneath the A1 (M), it provides a fascinating insight into how the Romans bathed, with a series of hot and cold rooms and baths.
You can also see how the under-floor 'hypocaust' heating system worked, and where the slaves used to sit to stoke the fire.
Displays of finds from the villa show how people lived and worked in the Roman countryside. There are also panels showing how the site was uncovered by archaeologists.
Welwyn Roman Baths are managed by Welwyn Hatfield Council Leisure and Community Services.

An experienced guide will give a short talk on the villa, and how the Baths were used. Worksheets are available on request.
Cost for guided talks is the usual entry fee of £1 per person (minimum charge £25 for In District, £30 for out of District). For every ten children one adult gets in free.
It is a good idea to combine a visit to the Roman bath-house with a visit to Verulamium Roman Museum at St Albans on the same day. Journey time between the two is about half an hour.
