Cromer Windmill from the north-west

Cromer Windmill is the last remaining postmill in Hertfordshire. This is the earliest type of English windmill. It gets its name from the massive oak post on which the mill body turns to face the sails into the wind, no matter what its direction. The present mill dates from 1679/81 and was in use until 1923, after which it became derelict. It was given to the Hertfordshire Building Preservation Trust in 1969. After many years of work, the mill has now been restored and is virtually in working order.

The mill was extensively rebuilt about 1860 and its equipment represents the peak of windmill development. The mill has Patent sails, a fantail and centrifugal governors to control the stone clearances.

Interior of stone floor.
The windmill is open from the second Sunday in May until mid-September on the following days: Sundays, Bank Holiday Mondays and the second and fourth Saturdays in each month, 2.30 - 5.00pm.

Adults £1.50, Children 25p

A guide can be provided to explain the workings of the mill and a short video is also shown explaining the history of the mill.
