High Wycombe is the largest town in Buckinghamshire, so it provides an employment centre for the county. Much of High Wycombes growth during the 18th and 19th centuries can be attributed to
the rising importance of the furniture industry here. In recognition of this, the town was once known as the furniture capital of England. Although the industry is still represented by some well known
names such as Ercol and Parker-Knoll, there are now new industries within the area.
To promote a modern and successful local economy, Wycombe District Council has created its Economic Development Unit. This co-ordinates local businesses, training agencies and business support
organisations and provides information, contacts, publications and advice. The unit also produces an annual Economic Development Programme, which sets out priorities and a schedule for the coming
year
