Brixham

Life in Brixham centres on the harbour and the bustle of one of Britain's busiest fishing ports. You can wander around the many harbourside shops, watch the fishermen unloading their daily catch, or take a peek at the work of the artists who gather at Artist's Corner.

Sample freshly caught seafood from one of the quayside's fish stalls, or relax in a pub or restaurant and watch life go by. Away from the harbour you can lose yourself in a maze of narrow, winding streets, and within walking distance from the town centre you will find some of the Riviera's most spectacular scenery. Sandy beaches and secluded coves give way to the towering cliffs at Berry Head, offering breathtaking views of Torbay and the starting point of the stretch of dramatic coast path that winds its way round to the village of Kingswear.

Brixham has the reputation as being the Mother Port of the British fishing industry. In times gone by the nomadic fleet of sailing trawlers fished as far a field as the cold waters of Greenland fishing for cod and the North Sea for soles and plaice. Today Brixham plays a very important part of the UK fishing industry and is home to the largest fleet of Beam trawlers in the UK. These large vessels stay at sea for around 5 days and fish mainly for top quality flat fish such as Dover sole, Turbot, Brill, and Plaice, which is why Brixham is the premier port for Dover sole landings in the UK. The inshore fleet fish for Whiting, Cod, Lemon soles, John dory, Squid, and many other species and land their catch on a daily basis. Scallops and crab are also a local speciality.

Brixham Marina is right on the harbour quayside and is now well established as a favourite cruising centre both for novices and for experienced yachtsmen from home and abroad.

The Brixham Regatta, originally the fisherman's holiday regatta, encourages visits from all classes of craft and the Marina hosts many rallies and events, making it popular with both local residents and visitors. The attractive replica of Francis Drake's famous ship, the Golden Hind, is moored in Brixham Harbour. Sails, masts and rigging above deck and period scenes below will give you a feel for life at sea as it used to be in the 16th century.
