The Cobham & Downside Walk

A pleasant stroll of an hour or two, on level ground and mainly away from busy roads. Put away those muddy boots and surf around in minutes. Click on a place on the map to start you will link to local website

The sketches indicate some of the prominent and older buildings of the area including the beautiful Church of St Andrews, some inns and some of the attractive houses on the route. The journey also passes several pretty, terraced and detached cottages, including the old Fire Station (now a private house) at the junction of Stoke and Tilt Roads.

The river Mole rises in Sussex near Gatwick Airport and eventually discharges into the River Thames at Hampton Court. During periods of heavy rain the Mole rises swiftly and spills over its banks to flood meadows at Cobham.

Apart from swans and ducks there are to be seen kingfishers, herons, woodpeckers, parakeets, pheasants and other bird life.

Cobham Mill, now resued from dilapidation by The Cobham Mill Preservation Trust, is restored and in working order. It was opened to the public in 1993 and can be seen in operation on the second Sunday of the month from April to October, 2pm to 5pm. Admission is free and special groups , such as schools or societies and technical bodies may view at other times by arrangement. (Telephone 01932 867387).

This walk is based a leaflet available at 25p. This is published by St Andrew's Church and the Cobham mill Presevation trust for the benefit of their charities. The illustrations were generously donated by John Bonny ARIBA.
