Esher
RETURN

Esher has long been famous for Sandown Park, the renowned world class race course, where Racing is staged all year round, both on the Flat and over jumps, and the quality of the sport is always of the highest class.

The course was created in 1875 by Sir Wilfred Brett on the site of some grazing land. It soon became one of the most popular race courses in England, attracting not only the British royal family but also some of the crowned heads of Europe. Today a combination of top jockeys and sleek coated thoroughbreds create an exciting day or evening out for all the family.

Take, for example, Sandown Park Finale Day (Saturday 28 April 2001), which features the last major chase of the national hunt season The Whitbread Gold Cup, won in 2000 in fine style by Beau and his jockey Carl Llewellyn. The unique card showcases steeplechasing and flat racing including "The Classic Trial" won by the subsequent Vodafone Derby second Sakhee.

Sandown Park Finale Day is a marvelous "Party at the Park" which climaxes with the Sandown Park Finale Awards rewarding the National Hunt seasons finest performers and a live concert follows from National Hunt racing's favourite band The Saw Doctors.

Sandown also provides a unique combination of exhibition, conference and banqueting facilities. Other activities within the extensive grounds include a fitness centre, dry skiing, squash, outdoor karting and golf.

Esher is also home to Claremont Landscape Gardens. Claremont's creation and development involved some of the greatest names in garden history - Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and 'Capability' Brown. The first gardens were begun c.1715, and later that century the splendour of Claremont was famed throughout the world.
