The original Athenaeum, opened in 1812, was used by the Plymouth Institute to promote science, literature and art in the community. Today's Athenaeum stands on the original site and was opened in 1961. The 352-seat theatre hosts regular amateur productions, whilst maintaining its heritage, the Athenaeum's 100-seat lecture room is the venue for educational events.
