Ridge village lies between Shenley and South Mimms. The village was part of the manor of Tyttenhanger, and, as its name suggests, stands high on a ridge 400ft above sea level with fine views over the countryside. It retains a true village atmosphere with several old timber-framed buildings, two farm barns and former almshouses built in 1844.

The parish church of St Margaret's was built by the Abbots of St Albans. An original wayside chapel dating from the 14th century now forms part of the chancel while the nave and tower were added in the 15th century.
