Why a Community History Project?
The Community History Project started in August 1999, with a comment that "it might be a good idea to record people's memories of Boreham Wood. The area has changed so much, especially since the second World War, that we were in danger of forgetting what it used to be like". In fact Boreham Wood has been around for many years, not just since the 1950s!

Who are we?
The Community History Project is a group of local people who have come together to record, collect and interpret the history and archaeology of Boreham Wood and Elstree. We are all volunteers with a keen interest in the place where we live and work.

What are we doing?
The Community History Centre
The Community History Project (CHP) is really on the move now - literally, transferring its base to No1 Drayton Road, Boreham Wood, next to the Borehamwood Times office.

With the help of Hertsmere Borough Council and Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council we have opened a local history room.

Sponsorship from Pinnacle Insurance Plc will enable the CHP to put on displays, work with schools, and start collecting material towards an archive on the local history of Elstree and Boreham Wood.

The Centre is run by volunteers. If you would like to help with stewarding, archiving, displays and research please get in touch, you do not need to know about the history, just an enthusiasm to join in.

The room displays information and objects on a wide range of local history topics including Elstree Studios during the 1950's and 60's, local farming, history of Keystone Knitting Mills, Drayton Road and how the town has changed over the last 100 years. These displays will change in October 2001.

The room was officially opened on the 11th November 2000.

Opening Times
Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays 11.00am - 3.00pm

Admission is free

Oral History Project
We are making a record of people's memories who live and work in Boreham Wood and Elstree. This will go towards an archive helping us to understand our recent past for future generations. If you have memories about school, work, what the area used to be like, or would wish to help, please get in touch.
