Information about Council  services can be hard to find - Which local Council? What phone number? Who to  ask for? - However, help is at hand in the south of the Cotswolds where an  Information Point for all Council services has been set up.

The Information Point is in  the Town Council offices in Dyer House, 3 Dyer Street, Cirencester. This is the  first point of call for local people wanting information about Council services,  whether Town, District or County Council.

Personal callers can pick  up leaflets and application forms for many services, such as planning and  housing benefit. You can speak to someone about your enquiry.
Telephone: 01285 655646.

Shooting -  There is an excellent Indoor Rifle and Pistol Range at the Bingham Hall, King  Street. Tel. 01285 653313

Squash - At  the Cotswold Leisure Centre.

Swimming -  Cirencester now has two pools - an indoor pool at the Sports Centre and a  outdoor pool with heated water.

The Open Air Swimming Pool  can be found by following the signposted footpath commencing at the junction of  Cecily Hill and Park Street.

The pool itself is probably  one of the oldest in the country, and was built during the winter of 1869/70 by  the local Bathurst family and then presented to the people of Cirencester, who  have made use of the pool and enjoyed the beautiful setting ever since. For the  past 20 years the running of the pool has been undertaken by a small band of  volunteers who have carried out extensive improvement works, including a sun  terrace, installation of a new boiler and improved facilities for changing. In  1993 a new tuck shop was built to cater for the increasing number of swimmers.

The pools open season is  from the end of May to September, during which time both young and old can enjoy  its facilities, including swimming lessons and lifeguard training.

The pool is also available  for private functions on application. Details from the Chairman on Tel: 01285  655147.

The pool opening hours are  8.00am to 7.00pm Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 6.00pm Saturday and 11.00am to  6.00pm Sundays.

How to  find out more about Cirencestertop

The Bingham Library has a  good local studies collection which is recommended for access to the published  town histories and the collection also includes a good section on the town’s  archaeology. The Corinium Museum also has a specialist library plus reference  material on its collections, available for study by appointment. The standard  town histories are:

K.J. Beecham History of  Cirencester and the Roman City of Corinium, first published in 1886 and  reprinted in 1978. Although a period piece, it remains the best source of  reference.

W. St Clair Baddeley A  History of Cirencester, a useful if not always reliable history published in  1924.

Richard Reece and  Christopher Catling Cirencester: the Development and Buildings of a Cotswold  Town, published by British Archaeological Reports, no.12 in 1975 and  essentially a study of buildings and building façades.

Alan McWhirr Archaeology  and History of Cirencester, a series of essays published by British  Archaeological Reports, no.30 in 1976.

Jean Welsford Cirencester: A History and Guide, published in 1987 - a very useful  history and update of Beecham and Baddeley.

Richard Tomkins Street  Names of Cirencester, excellent introduction, published in  1987.

Alec Clifton-Taylor Cirencester, re-published by Cirencester Civic Society in 1988.

Timothy Darvill and  Christopher Gerrard Cirencester: Town and Landscape, a most useful source  of reference (extensive lists), summary history and planning study, published in  1994.

Cirencester Excavation  Committee and Cotswold Archaeological Trust have published a series of five  detailed reports on archaeological excavations in the town undertaken between  1960-85.

They are available for  study at both library and museum. There is no shortage of books on the  Cotswolds. Two of the most recent are not only first-rate but contain many  useful references to earlier work:

Anthea Jones The  Cotswolds (1994)

David Verey and Alan Brooks Gloucestershire: The Cotswolds in the Pevsner series - The Buildings of  England, extensively revised and published in 1999.
