Awliscombe
Return East Devon

Awliscombe has a population of 450 and straddles the busy A373 Honiton to Cullompton road, one and a half miles north-west from Honiton. St Cyres Hill to the north-east and Buckerell and Bushy Knaps to the south-west provide shelter, and the River Wolf was used to power mills. The Parish encompasses the hamlets of Wolverstone, where legend says the last wolf in England was killed, and Weston (or Waringstone) with its Domesday Manor. Economically, Awliscombe is predominantly a dairy farming area. Other businesses include an agricultural engineering firm, builders/undertakers/DIY shop, B&B establishments and farm holiday cottages, agricultural haulier, agricultural contractor, horticultural engineer, architectural technician, and 2 pubs, i.e. The Awliscombe Inn, and The Otter Inn, at Weston. Awliscombe was the birthplace of Thomas Chard, the last Abbot of Ford Abbey, near Chard, in Somerset, who was born about the year1470. The village appears to have been of some importance in the district in early days, as it is understood that a market at Awliscombe on Wednesdays with a Fair for three days at
Michaelmas, was granted to Matthew Giffard in the year 1291.

The Parish Church, St Michael and All Angels, set at the foot of St Cyres Hill is dated from the early 14c, and despite being heavily restored in Victorian times, contains such treasures as a fine south porch with niches and fleurons, built by Thomas Chard. There are ceiled wagon roofs, a richly carved nave, arcade, a beautiful 15c stone screen with angels as corbels at the foot of the tracery, and the parish stocks.

The Church plays an active part in our community, with a monthly Family Service and kids at 9:30 a.m , social, and fund-raising events, etc.

Awliscombe has a popular and active Primary School, currently attended by around 100 pupils. Generally, young people are very well catered for, as we also have a, Nursery/Playgroup, a youth group (Friday Club), and the Honiton Young Farmers Club meets regularly in the Parish Hall.

Other organisations include the Football Club, Womens Institute, Over 60's Club, Ex-Servicemen & Womens' Association, Young Wives Group, and an 'Awliscombe Amblers' walking group.

Our Parish Hall, run by a Management Committee, plays host to many meetings, social gatherings, and fund raising events, etc., and is an essential part of our community.
