Ottery St Mary is one of the oldest and most historic towns in Devon.
The Parish boundaries remain virtually unchanged since they were fixed by Edward the Confessor in 1061.
At the time of the English Civil War it became the regional headquarters of the King's troops. Among the town's literary claims to fame is the fact that Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born here in 1772, while more recently, Ottery St Mary was featured in the Harry Potter books as 'Ottery St Catchpole'.
The famous medieval church of St Mary, rich in colour and historic craftsmanship, dominates this riverside town. A pleasant walk along the pretty millstream, leads to the unique Georgian Tumbling Weir. The parish boasts over 80 footpaths, an excellent gymnasium, a floodlit synthetic hockey pitch, plus nearby tennis courts. Local clubs also provide bowls, cricket, hockey and football.
