Hatherleigh
RETURN NORTH DEVON

Hatherleigh

The welcome offered in Hatherleigh is no less today than when stage-coaches drew up at its coaching inns. You can stroll around the town to take in its real character – including a working pottery, art gallery and a host of antique shops, tea rooms and historic inns, one of which actually brews its own ales.

Still popular as a small market town, you will find colourful stalls in the car park near the livestock market every Tuesday.

The spire which crashed through the nave of the Parish Church in the violent storms of 1990 has been rebuilt and the original timbers have been incorporated in the repair. In the centre of the town, the church contains examples of Jacobean woodwork; notably the communion table and rails and the churchwardens pew.

Hatherleigh Monument is a spectacular viewpoint giving views of northern Dartmoor.

The Torchlit Carnival day, early in November starts and ends with flaming tar barrels being dragged through the streets in an ancient tradition.
