Safety Centre Milton Keynes Hazard Alley An interactive indoor educational safety centre
Imagine a place where children can experience and learn how to react to a house fire,
an oncoming train, a drowning person and various other dangerous situations, but all in perfect safety and under instruction by highly trained staff ¦ thats HAZARD ALLEY!
The Charity
Opened in 1994 we are a partnership-based community safety project, involving Thames Valley Police and Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, other statutory
organisations, local government, health authorities and the private sector. The Centre is not centrally funded and as a registered charity relies heavily on donations and sponsorship.
Our Aim
Our primary aim is to help education children in the 7 – 12 age range about the hazards of the modern world and to improve safety in the community. The theme
of safety is linked to the National Curriculum, so our Teachers Pack is designed to make the visit to Hazard Alley part of the years work, giving suggestions for pre-visit preparation
and post-visit follow-up work.
The Centre
Using our very life-like safety scenarios, our specially trained guides deliver the messages in a very interactive and
effective way, giving visitors a truly stimulation and memorable experience.
Amongst the messages we deliver are:-
- Road safety
- Personal safety and protective behaviour
- Safety in the home
- The consequences of crime on victims and offenders
- How vandalism and anti-social behaviour affects others
- Railway/Farm/Water safety
- Dangers on building sites
- Demonstration the Recovery Position
Volunteers
We always need more volunteer tour guides to show small groups of children around the Centre. Our guides receive full training with the opportunity to learn at
their own pace. Travelling expenses/attendance allowances are paid. If you are interested in this rewarding and worthwhile work find out more by ringing: 01908 263009
The Safety
Centre was recently lucky enough to have help from the Knowledge Media Institute at the Open University revamping our website. The new site is more interactive and gives children the
opportunity to access games and information. It also offers teaches additional follow-up materials for use back in school
We now offer HSE approved First Aid at Work courses for
industry. The tuition which is of the highest standard, will be given by trained paramedics. More information can be obtained by ringing 01908 263009 and asking for Barbara Cherryman.
