Between Biggleswade, 3.5 miles away, and the Cambridgeshire border, this ancient town had a weekly market before 1209 and has long been a market gardening centre. Sandy is 3
miles west.
The market square is fringed by 18th century buildings and has a neo-Georgian clock house of 1956, now used as a library. There is a good variety of shops
and both Lower and Hiddle schools in the town.
Several fine timber framed buildings and 17th century houses survive, despite a disastrous fire in 1789, which destroyed
about 50 buildings. The Church of St Mary Virgin is of brown cobbles and dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, with an embattled clerestory chancel and chapel. The stalls
have plain misericords and there is some stained glass of 1784, while the Churchyard contains some well carved and interesting gravestones,
As well as a Post
Office and Doctors' Group Health Centre there is a golf course plus football, rugby, cricket and tennis facilities.
