Northill is in wooded country and was the birth place of Thomas Tompion, the clockmaker. There is a
Lower School , and the community is served by a mobile library and a mobile clinic. While there are limited local shopping facilities, the majority at Upper Caldecote, a bus
service links it to Bedford and Biggleswade
St Mary's Church, built of ironstone, is early fourteenth century, the nave being the oldest part. The
Church clock is a Tompion, but it is not certain whether it was made by Thomas or his father.
Ickwell Bury, south of the village, is a neo-Georgian house rebuilt in 1937, when the original mansion
home of the Harvey family burnt down. The 17th century octagonal dovecote and stables survived the fire and still stand.
Northill Grange dates from about 1700 and nearby, in Home Wood, is an earthwork which was probably of a
Norman Motte.
Ickwell Green, south of Northill, the scene of traditional dancing around the maypole each May Day, is
centred around a spacious green, flanked by cottages.
There is a Church at Upper Caldecote which was designed and built by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1868.
