Meppershall with its mile long street on a windy ridge has a strong community spirit. Local bus services link the village with nearby Shefford, Hitchin (5 miles away) and Luton
(9 miles away to the south). Most local employment is on farms and the many glasshouses, which have developed over the last half century. There is also a small electronics
factory but many residents commute to nearby towns. Facilities include a bakehouse/general store, Post Office and a Lower School.
The ironstone Church of Our Lady has a
12th century tower and north trancept. Parts date from the 15th century, and the nave and aisles were added in 1876. The 12 sided font is 15th century, and there is an
old chest with iron bands. The castle, behind the Church, is believed to have been the home of Mepsal, an early landlord, in about 1100
Half a mile east of the Church
is St Thomas's Chapel, with its superb Norman doorway, which formerly belonged to Chicksands Priory. The building stands next to Chapel Farm and has been kept in repair and
used as a barn.
Other historic buildings include the 17th century Manor, which has one of the best half-timbered fronts in the county; the Old Rectory, built in 1792; a
delapidated 17th century thatched cottage in Stondon Road and a farm in High Street, believed to be 16th century despite a roughcast appearance.
